Short message service (SMS) is a text messaging service that enables you to send and receive short e-mails via your cell phones. SMS is similar to e-mail in that messages are stored at SMS centers and then forwarded to your cell phone whenever it's available. SMS messages are usually limited to 160 characters in length.
You also can use your e-mail software to send SMS text messages to mobile phone users from your desktop e-mail client. To do this you'll need to know the correct domain to send the e-mail to as well as the recipient's cell phone number. As an example, if you wanted to send a text message to a friend who is a Sprint PCS customer, you would format the address as cellphonenumber@ messaging.sprintpcs.com.
Your e-mail server can find the messaging.sprintpcs.com server on the Internet and send your e-mail to it. The messaging server forwards the e-mail to your friend's phone as a text message. Here are the messaging addresses for some of the larger cellular carriers:
- Nextel: nmiibei@messaging.nextel.com
- Cingular: number@mobile.mycingular.com
- T-Mobile (USA): number@tmomail.net
- Virgin Mobile (USA): number@vmobl.com
- AT&T wireless: number@mobile.att.net
- Verizon wireless: number@vtext.com
- Verizon (formerly Air touch): number@airtouchpaging.com
Generally, you are allowed about 20 characters for the "from" line and 160 characters total for the entire message, including the heading. Some carriers allow more and some less,- you'll have to check the carrier's Web site for message size.
